Five Reasons Adults Should Practice Martial Arts

We spend a lot of time discussing the benefits of martial arts for children, and today we’re taking a closer look at the multitude of reasons that practicing martial arts is a worthwhile endeavor for adults too. We could share many, many reasons, but for the sake of brevity, we’ve limited ourselves to five. Here we go!

Actually, wait. Before we begin listing the reasons, let’s address the elephant in the post. Learning to defend yourself is the obvious answer, so let’s assume we all see that as an unspoken benefit and dig a little deeper. Okay, proceed!

  • The practice of martial arts is a major stress-buster.

No matter what kind of life you live, we all have stressors. Work, family, schedules, money, whatever – we all have it. Practicing martial arts is an effective way to eliminate stress because a major component is channeling energy (good and bad). On the mats, the goal is to forget the distractions and stresses in your life, to clear your mind and focus on the present. It’s a wonderfully relieving activity, and it has the added benefit of staying with you after class is over. The ability to focus on what’s happening right here, right now is powerful, and you’ll find it useful in other aspects of your life.

  • Everyone enjoys equal playing time, no matter your level.

You don’t have to be the best, or the fastest, or the fittest – you’ll be just as involved as the next student. Your progress is a direct reflection of your effort, even if you aren’t a natural athlete or incredibly flexible or in the best shape of your life. And that means that it doesn’t matter if this is day one or day five hundred and one – your output is a result of your input, which can be incredibly motivating.

  • There are more health benefits than you may realize.

Sure, consistence physical exercise is going to help you tone up, reduce fat and improve your cardio. But martial arts training also improves flexibility, balance, hand-eye coordination and builds strength.

  • It can improve your mental health

For goal-oriented individuals, martial arts is ideal. Working toward an ultimate goal by accomplishing lots of mini goals along the way is both motivating and empowering. It can give you a sense of purpose, and without that, people tend to be kind of rudder-less.

  • Martial arts training can improve your social life.

Moving through challenging trials can bring people together, and belt testing is no joke! Working toward a common goal as a team is a great way to build strong bonds.
