Considering martial arts classes? Start here.

Beginning martial arts training can seem like an intimidating prospect for some people. “Oh, I could never do that,” they chuckle uncomfortably, shaking their heads. But the truth is, almost anyone can practice martial arts. And if you’re one of the many people secretly wishing you had a black belt, or knew how to throw a lethal jab/cross/Thai kick combo, or could do the splits, well, it’s a good thing you’re reading this.

There are two things you absolutely need to be prepared for if you’re really ready to start martial arts. First: are you ready to commit to showing up to class three times a week? And second: are you ready to get physical? And by that, we mean, are you ready to get moving?

If you’re still with us, then congratulations – you seem committed. At Freestyle Martial Arts, we recommend attending three classes a week. It’s the perfect number of classes for learning and practicing, but it’s not so much that you’re going to physically burn out. In fact, you’ll likely be jonesing for more.

The second requirement, the physical one, seems obvious. But physical fitness isn’t just a happy side effect of regular martial arts training – it’s a spot-on example of that whole “you get out what you put in” notion. In class, you’ll be practicing those roundhouse kicks, for sure, but you’re also going to be doing push-ups and holding planks and pumping out jumping jacks. You may struggle in the beginning, but that’s the thing about consistency in your attendance – it gets easier.

Let’s consider other potential obstacles, shall we?

  • You aren’t in good shape. See above – once you start, your physical fitness will improve like gangbusters.

  • You don’t know how to hit. That’s a great place to start. It means you have no bad habits to break yet – you’re just ready to start with proper technique.

  • You have, like, zero flexibility. Ah, grasshopper, that’s what regular practice and training is for. We can’t promise you’ll nail those center splits, but you’ll notice improved flexibility with regular training.

  • You don’t even know what to wear. Hey, that’s cute. Don’t worry, we have a great introductory offer of two private and one group lesson, and it comes with a gi and your very first belt.

  • You’re 20 (or 30 or 60) and you feel weird about starting now. First, read this. And then take comfort in the fact that at Freestyle Martial Arts, you’ll be part of a diverse student body made up of folks of all ages and abilities. No one will be surprised by your arrival, don’t you worry.

If you have another reason, share it with us and let us tell you why martial arts at Freestyle will be a fulfilling, exciting and rewarding experience. If you’re ready to train, we’re ready for you.
