To our Freestyle family

If we’re being completely honest, becoming business owners was never the plan. Anyone who knows Scott and me knows that Freestyle is a huge part of our lives. We’ve been training here for over 20 years and teaching for the past 16. We began martial arts so we could do something together and become more active and we’ve never looked back.

Martial arts is a challenge, physically and mentally, and the rewards are immeasurable. Still, training and teaching is one thing — running the entire show is another. So when the opportunity to take over Freestyle came up, believe us when we say it was emotionally charged. But after a lot of discussion and pros-and-cons lists and more discussion, one fact remained — we were incredibly lucky to be part of such an amazing school for so long, and we wanted to give other people the same opportunity.

The truth is that we love this place. We love the families, the students, the curriculum, the energy, and the sense of community. We love being surrounded by people who are driven and focused, and we love that some of our closest friendships have been formed on the mat.

So here we are — humbled, grateful, delighted, mildly panicked, and incredibly excited about all the good things to come.

It’s been a wild ride so far, but again and again, our Freestyle community shows its true colors. This year’s group of black belt testers is a shining example. While every black best test is a challenge unto itself, this group had to manage a global pandemic, shutdowns, zoom classes, mask restrictions, and hazardous air quality on top of the various mental and physical demands of check listing and testing. The theme of the test was Resilience, and this group demonstrated that quality in spades. We are so proud of them, and so grateful to everyone at the school taking all of these changes in stride.

That includes our truly incredible staff. Surrounding yourself with good people, who are passionate about what they do, makes it easy to accomplish great things, and we’re seeing that play out in real life. Our team has weathered a lot of changes and difficulties in the past two years. Yet day in and day out, through all the highs and lows, we watch as our staff members bring their best to the school. The culture and atmosphere here are truly something special, and much of the credit for that goes to our team.

To our FMA families — the future is bright! We understand the change in ownership may have come as a surprise, and leaving the building that FMA called home for almost 20 years was its own hurdle. Thank you for handling all of these changes so graciously. We’re incredibly grateful to the American Legion for giving us space while our new home is being built out, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to 6275 Sharlands.

A little sneak peek of all the good things to come:

  • More mat space and options! The school is growing rapidly, and our new location has the space we need to accommodate our new and old martial artists. We’ll also have the ability to join two mats together to form Mega Mat — no more overcrowding during testing and large events!
  • Tons of parking and easy drop-off and pick-up! No more parking in dirt and no more roundabout drop-offs and pick-ups. Parking has always been an issue at Freestyle and it’s one of the main reasons we chose our new location. The new home has plenty of parking and convenient drop-off locations.
  • Dedicated changing rooms! This has been a request for years, and we’re so excited to make it a reality. No more changing in bathrooms!
  • Weapons class! Weapons and tricking classes are making a much-anticipated comeback.
  • Freestyle Fitness! Oh yes, it’s true. Cardio kickboxing, Throwdown, Total Body, and Fighter’s Physique are all coming back. Stay tuned!
  • Convenient shopping and food nearby! No more gas station food (unless that’s what you want, because yes, there’s a gas station by the new location too). Starbucks, Burger Me, Jalapenos, Moxie’s, and Eagle Fitness are all nearby with a Raley’s and more just up the street!
  • Easy access right off I-80! No more waiting in long lines when getting off the freeway at McCarran. The new location is directly adjacent to the freeway with super easy freeway access.

As overwhelming as it is becoming business owners, we know we made the right decision. Over the last two decades, Freestyle has been the source of so many good things not only in our lives, but the lives of anyone who’s made the decision to walk through the door. Now, we’re honored to continue that tradition.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Seriously. We’re so grateful that this FMA community is along for the ride.
