Two Questions to Ask Yourself Before Starting Martial Arts

white-beltIf you have this wild idea about starting martial arts, but you’re not sure where or how to begin, you’re in the right place. There are really one two questions you need to ask yourself before starting martial arts, and we’re going to cover them right here, right now.

  1. Can you commit to attending classes at least two but ideally three times every week?
  2. Are you all in, which is a cool way of asking whether you’re willing to work hard and follow instructions?

These questions may not be what you were expecting, but these really are the two considerations that separate the folks from start their martial arts journey and stick with it, and the ones who start, stumble, and fade. Age doesn’t matter. Disabilities don’t matter. Poor physical fitness doesn’t matter. What matters is a commitment to showing up consistency, and working hard when you’re in class. It’s really as simple as that.

At Freestyle Martial Arts Academy here in Reno, we recommend attending classes three times a week. It’s the perfect amount for learning and practicing, but it’s not so many that you’re at risk of physically burning out. Actually, you’ll probably end up jonesing for more.

So there’s the regularly-showing-up part, and then there’s the following-directions-and-committing-to-working-hard part. You know the saying “You get out what you put in,” and it’s a bulls-eye in this scenario. You can’t just go through the motions of all of those push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, planks, forms and basics, kicking combos and other components of your martial arts curriculum. Well, you can, but who’s it benefiting? Not you. So show up, do your best, and leave it all on the mats. That’s the thing about consistency – this stuff gets easier because you get better.

If you can answer those questions honestly, you’ll have a realistic answer of whether starting martial arts is a smart move. And if you happen to have more questions, we’re happy to answer them. Fire away, and let us tell you exactly why beginning your martial arts training at Freestyle Martial Arts Academy will be a rewarding, fulfilling and fun experience. If you’re still reading this, you’re ready to train. And we’re ready for you. So let’s get you started.
